In his work ‘Haus ur Nacht-Video’ (1996), the German artist Gregor Schneider immerses society
in the mysterious spaces of Haus ur. The artist completely altered the house in
Unterheydener Straße in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt. He elaborately added additional walls,
ceilings and floors to the existing spaces, creating spaces in the space in this way,
although he also left some narrow dirty corridors between the old and new walls. He
plastered over wall sockets and installed windows in the interior walls with lamps for
daylight positioned outside. Everything appears real. The space in space situation is no
longer noticed by the visitors (the houses was accessible to visitors).
In the video ‘Haus ur Nacht-Video’ (1996), the artist wandered as camera operator through
the otherwise uninhabited house. He films relentlessly and with rapid camera moves every
corner and every detail, literally investigates the originally outer spaces, the newly
created interior as well as intermediate spaces. The claustrophobic spaces often make an
oppressive or even frightening impression on the visitor and it proved to be difficult to
differentiate between what was real and what was not. This is exactly what is conveyed by
the video, which is solely accompanied by the artist’s loud rapid steps during the filming.
