For one day, the artist orbits an old oak tree, constantly carving a ring-shaped incision in its trunk with a pocket knife. The hours pass, his gaze remains on the immovable trunk, his feet leave a circular trace around the tree, the knife cuts deeper into the trunk. Annual ring after annual ring is grasped by the blade. The artist's persevering movement and his tools penetrate the oak. Its life rings – they document climate and time – are completely uncovered at the moment when the oak finally falls over.
Julius von Bismarck's works are to be understood as artistic research, as both an attempt and a method to combine the systems of art and science that are generally regarded as separate. "I draw my inspiration from science and work with artistic," he says by himself. Julius von Bismarck investigates the human perceptual apparatus with his installations, video works and performances and he challenges our perceptive habits.
